From my HAWAIʻIFUDA series - my interpretation of the classic Japanese flower card game of Hanafuda. Based on the maple cards.
ʻUlu or breadfruit is seriously such a miracle fruit. Delicious and savory like potatoes but without the bloat. I was first introduced to ʻulu in Kindergarten by a classmate’s father who made the BEST baked chips.
Aside from its versatility and yummy flavor ʻulu are rich in protein, fiber, and antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients.
I also chose to highlight the moʻo. When I was little, I thought having the moʻo, or lizard, as a family guardian was anticlimactic. But I quickly changed my mind as I heard tales of them as powerful shapeshifters and dragons. Many visitors and even kamaʻāina mistake the green gecko as moʻo, when in fact they are predators to the now extinct native species.
