From my HAWAIʻIFUDA series - my interpretation of the classic Japanese flower card game of Hanafuda. Based on the Iris cards.
Since I had to integrate so many man made elements, and with words of reassurance from friends, I’ve decided to include canoe plants…significant for their culture contribution and survival of Hawaiian people.
Kalo is a staple food which also represents ʻohana. While I barely remember a lot of things from school (mostly due to a short attention span and getting older), I’ll always be grateful for our 4th grade teacher Mr. Miyashiro for having our class work in the loʻi. Feeling connected to our roots and the land is a life long lesson I’ll never forget.
