In 2025, I was fortunate enough to join a Huaka’i for artists at Auwahi Forest.  We all ate lunch on a carpet of ‘a’ali’i leaves under a grove of halapepe trees.  One artist, Hana-chan, sat against one, weaving with some of the dried, fallen halapepe leaves, donning a messy bun that had collected foliage.  I found it quite difficult to distinguish where the tree started and where she began.
